2017 Mini Tigers Program (New Guidelines)

Developmental Swim Program

The Mini Tigers program was launched in 2009 to a great deal of fanfare and numerous smiles and cheers. This program is for swimmers who can swim the entire length of the 25m pool freestyle with some side breathing without assistance and without holding onto a wall or lane line. They should also be able to swim a length on their backs. This program is for swimmers that are interested in joining the swim team but might not yet be able to tolerate a practice that consists of swimming up and down the lanes for an extended period of time.

Note: this is NOT a “learn to swim” program or an alternative to swim lessons, but rather bridges the gap from novice swimmer to the developmental team. The goal of the Mini Tigers program is to move swimmers to the full team as soon as possible.

Evaluations

All swimmers will be evaluated by a Coach for the Mini Tiger program on the first day of summer practice (Monday, June 26th @ 8:45am). If you are unsure if your swimmer is ready for the main swim team, please bring them to one of the evening practices starting May 22nd at 5pm, for an evaluation. A parent should be present at the evaluation session and your child will be asked to demonstrate their ability to swim. The swimmer will get in the lap pool near the diving boards, close to the wall. Each child will swim one at a time. They will first be asked to swim 25m of freestyle. They will then be allowed a short break before being asked to swim 25m of back stroke. Those swimmers who are not quite ready for the mini-tigers are referred to the AFC swim lesson program.

See practice times and schedule for Mini Tigers here.

At the beginning of at least one Monday night home B meet, the Mini Tiger swimmers will swim the length the 25m pool with a kick board or with a Mini Tiger Coach's assistance. The Mini Tigers also have their own mini meet at the end of the season where they can show off their skills to the team and parents with lots of cheering and clapping. They are rewarded with a medal and a certificate after they finish.

Members of the Mini Tigers are welcome and encouraged to participate in all team social activities, including the Tiger Madness Celebration.

Families that only have Mini Tigers need three (3) volunteer points for the 2017 season.
